Hanwha Azdel, Inc. sells Shelby, NC, GMT plant to sister company Hanwha L&C Alabama, LLC

Hanwha Azdel, Inc. has finalized the transfer of its Shelby, North Carolina, Glass Mat Thermoplastic (GMT) operations to its sister company Hanwha L&C Alabama LLC (HLAL). In combination with this transfer, Hanwha will invest in a new fiberglass mat line in Shelby for use in innovative GMT composites that will complement the company’s already extensive product portfolio.

The Hanwha Group is a diversified conglomerate with over 20,000 employees, 30 affiliated companies, including Hanwha L&C Corporation, and US$25 Billion in Revenue.  Hanwha has four key business areas: Chemical, Finance & Securities, Distribution, and Leisure & Services.  Hanwha L&C Alabama LLC is a manufacturer of automotive parts specializing in GMT and EPP materials.  The company was established in 2005 and is located in Opelika, Alabama.

“We are excited to welcome the Shelby team to the HLAL family,” said SJ Ryu, Chief Operating Officer, Hanwha L&C Alabama. “The combination of the material technology in Shelby, and the part molding know-how in Opelika enhances our ability to better serve our customers in both areas of the business.”

“Hanwha’s investment in the new fiberglass mat line will offer both improved performance and more consistent quality, and thus enable us to better serve our current and future customers,” said Philip Welton, Business Leader in Shelby. “We also believe that one company that combines material technology, design & engineering, and molding technology will provide greater benefits to our customers in both market & application development.”

Hanwha Azdel Inc. manufactures high performance thermoplastic composites designed for both interior and exterior applications across many different industries. Major segments served include automotive, heavy truck, recreational vehicles, and industrial and other transportation applications. Hanwha acquired Hanwha Azdel from SABIC Innovative Plastics and PPG Industries back in November of 2007. The Shelby plant was part of that acquisition.  Hanwha Azdel will continue to market and sell its Low-Weight Reinforced Thermoplastic (LWRT) sheet products.

The SuperLite® product which is manufactured at Hanwha Azdel's Lynchburg, Virginia plant, has become a standard for automotive interior applications.
